What Is Worship?
Many people hear "worship" and immediately think of praising and thanking God. That is an important part of worship, but it doesn't start there. Worship begins first and foremost with God giving us His mercy, His forgiveness, His life, His salvation. For this reason, worship is often called "the divine service" - where God serves us by giving us His rich gifts and blessings. Jesus came not to be served, but to serve, and give His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28). He still does this today in His Church, by forgiving us, by proclaiming His Word in the Scripture readings and sermon, and by feeding us with His body and blood in the Lord's Supper for forgiveness, life, and salvation. When we receive these wonderful gifts from Him, we then respond in praise and thanksgiving.

What to Expect when You Visit
Because of what worship is, our services revolve around God and His gifts to us. To put God at the center, we use a form of worship service that presents all of God's gifts to us in an orderly and beautiful way, like a ring band that displays a precious jewel and allows its beauty to be better seen. This is the order of service found in the Lutheran Service Book hymnal in the pews and outlined in the bulletin you will be given at the entrance into the church.
The orders of divine service we use offer a timeless and reverent way to come before God to receive His grace and mercy in His word and sacrament. While fads and trends come and go with each passing year, the divine service connects us with something much bigger than ourselves and unites us both with our Lord and with the church of all times and places through the one faith we hold in common.
Depending on what you are used to, you may encounter things in the worship service that you have never experienced before. That's all right! There's a learning curve to any new thing, and we're just happy you're here with us. The divine service is very rich and meaningful, so there's a lot to learn about, and it can be overwhelming at first. But it's a carefully designed tool to help us grow in the faith, and keep our attention focused where it should be: God and His mercy, not on ourselves. If you have any questions, you are more than welcome to ask the pastor or an elder before the service, or to ask any member of the congregation for help in figuring out where we are during the service.
We are delighted to receive the forgiveness, life, and salvation of God in the Lord's Supper (holy communion) every Sunday. In accordance with the Scriptures, we believe that it is truly the body and blood of Jesus, freely given and shed for us on the cross for the forgiveness of sins. Receiving the Lord's Supper here is a confession of agreement in our teaching and a submission to the care of the pastor of this congregation. Because of this, any visitors wishing to commune with us are kindly asked to speak with the pastor before the service begins.
